I have used helicoils inline to get strong threads in soft materials polyethylene that can withstand more torque and much more wear than the plastic could have held up to. I'll second the Timeserts for going down a thread size, but they're expensive, especially the "installation kit". The counterbore sold with the kit is a bit of a joke. You'll quickly remove teeth from the counterbore if you're not consistently perpendicular to the bore and turning with constant force.
I had to c'bore the last 8 holes with a single tooth, but that was in an aluminum engine block and the car has done 40,km since. If you use two helicoils to get a longer grip they can't get 'out of sync' because they are both held in same thread. That's not a worry. There is no way to stack Heli coils inside each other. But, why?? Helicoil calls them twinserts. They're intended to restore an oversize STI tapped hole, and yes, one insert is installed inside another.

Has anyone got into trouble with indexing thread leads when trying to use two short Heli-Coils to fix a strip out, when you didn't have a long one? I've got two thread repaired holes, one that will only allow the screw to go in half way, the other lined up great and will accept the the bolt fine.
I believe most the inserts come in either x1. Click to expand Tzed Addicted to ArboristSite. Heli-coils are too hard for a tap to cut well. A thread system reaches near max strength at 1. Seems like if you could dress that area off, it would allow the top one to wind in further and align with the bottom insert. TheRickster ArboristSite Operative.
