This is the location where northeast winds in the Northern Hemisphere converge with the southeast winds from the Southern Hemisphere. ITCZ is the front between two air masses carried by the tropical easterlies which change with changing season. Student from India. I am working on Asian Monsoon. The Intertropical Convergence Zone ITCZ , is the area encircling the earth near the equator where the northeast and southeast trade winds come together.
The ITCZ follows the sun in that the position varies seasonally. It moves north in the Northern Hemisphere summer and south in the Northern Hemisphere winter. Therefore, the ITCZ is responsible for the wet and dry seasons in the tropics.
Hello, as an amateur observer having difficulty to read the technical part of this article I wonder if we are seeing the southern hemisphere jet streams spread out over a far wider area than before and particularly in Northerly direction up to about 10 degrees South especially over the Pacific and Atlantic. Is the observation correct and if so, is this possibly correlated to the northerly shift of the ITCZ?
If so, what are the likely consequences for the weather patterns in the Southern hemisphere? A trend in the Southern Hemisphere jet stream over a relatively short period is difficult to discern, among the background of large seasonal and year-to-year variability.
The question of whether and how ITCZ shifts are related to jet shifts is interesting. They need not be related, but both can respond to changes in the energy budget. I am planning to write something on that in the next few months. Anjay: The ITCZ is essentially the boundary between the northern and southern hemispheres of the earth. The equator is an idealized boundary; the ITCZ is a real physical boundary as defined by atmospheric conditions at any time.
The line at which northern trades NE direction and southern trade winds from the SE roughly converge. It is clearly visible, particularly over the oceans, in animations that show wind and pressure.

The difference between the ITCZ and the Monsoon Trough is simply the direction of the winds from both hemispheres when they meet. During the northern hemisphere summer, the winds from the northern hemisphere sometimes change direction from NE to SW. When this occurs you have a Monsoon Trough. Due to the new movement of winds they favor the genesis of vorticity around very low pressures which in turn could form more easily tropical cyclones.
Seasons are the result of this. ITCZ moves toward the hemisphere with most heat, wich are either hemisphere summers. According to me ITCZ is basically the trough where both the north eastern and south western winds converge or meet.
You must know that winds move from high pressure to low pressure, therefore when the winds meet an area of low pressure is created on the landmass which in turn brings in winds with moisture causing rainfall.
